Origins and Development of the Department of Organization and Management
The origins of the Department of Organization and Management, previously known as the Institute of Organization and Management, date back to 1963. This was when Professor Alfred Czermiński established the Department of Business Economics at the Faculty of Production Economics of the Higher School of Economics and assumed its leadership. The reorganization of the institution in 1970, which led to the formation of the University of Gdańsk, positioned the Department within the Institute of Industrial Economics at the Faculty of Production Economics.
Early Growth and Expansion
In the early 1970s, a reform of economic studies took place, resulting in an increase in the number of students and the quantitative and scientific development of the staff. Initiated by Professor Alfred Czermiński and driven by his exceptional dedication and organizational skills, an extension to the building, known today as the "Alfredówka," was constructed. On September 17, 1973, the Institute of Organization and Management was established, initially comprising four scientific and didactic departments with 25 academic staff and 5 administrative-technical employees. The group of individuals who built the Institute over the years included notable professors such as Małgorzata Czerska, Halina Czubasiewicz, Piotr Grajewski, Zbigniew Kreft, Bogdan Nogalski, Aurelia Polańska, and Ryszard Rutka.
The Sopot School of Management
For many years, the department's staff have been creating what is known as the Sopot School of Management—a community of economists who integrate the psychosocial aspects of organizational functioning with structural elements and strategy. The hallmark of the School is its focus on the practical aspects of managing companies and institutions.
Current Structure and Academic Offerings
Presently, the Department of Organization and Management, which is the largest department within the Faculty of Management, consists of a team of 25 research and teaching staff, as well as one administrative assistant. Our staff conduct classes across various fields and specializations, particularly excelling in the HR Management in Organizations specialization, our flagship program. For many years, we have also offered postgraduate studies, currently including Effective Management in Healthcare Units, Postgraduate Managerial Studies, Human Capital Management, and Organization and Management in Railway Transport.
Research Focus
The department's scientific research focuses on current management issues in enterprises and public organizations. Recent research projects have addressed problems such as:
- Human capital management across different employee generations, diversity management, and employee satisfaction.
- Digital transformation in the context of process management, remote work, a four-day work week, Lean Management, and waste in IT projects.
- Strategic thinking, the application of the Ambidexterity concept, and boundaries in management.
- Regional innovation and entrepreneurial universities.
Internationalization
An important aspect of our work is the internationalization of both our research and teaching. Our staff conduct classes for students from foreign universities as part of the SEA EU alliance and the Erasmus program.
